Ryan, the American Couchsurfer seem to be heading the same way as me, so we decided to hang out for a while. We spent yesterday in a southern Belizean village called Placencia.
Today we’re supposed to get a taxi boat to an island called Caye Caulker (pronounced “key”). We left Placencia at 5am and arrived in Belize City before 8am.
On the way we saw these guys pouting oranges into a huge cage basket on the side of the road so we stopped and asked them for a couple. Fresh oranges for breakfast. Arriving in the City we returned the car to the dealer then Jaime took us to the pier.
Boarded the taxi boat to Caye Caulker and chatted about travelling, movies, etc. with this American that was going to the island too. As we didn’t know (or remember) their names we referred to them as the “San Francisco couple”.
One hour after arrived at the Caye and checked in to Tina’s Backpackers (18 Bz per person) then went to the Split beach bar.
On the way we saw this guy singing a cool reggae tune called “She’s royal” and when a sexy girl walked past he shouted “Natural Beauty!”
Lots of Rastafarians, tourists and locals listened to this chilled out Caribbean music. We hung out, swam a bit and drank chilled beer.
There was this guy with a board and dice, where people would bet on a number or a side of the casted die. He would call his possible punter shouting: “Payday people!”
Back to the hostel rested in the hammocks. Such a relaxed place, were people just take it easy, actually very easy! Evening came and went out to get a bite to eat.
On the main road there were lots of restaurants all serving lobster as we were in the middle of a lobster fest. There was a fat guy with a tempting lobster deal. We also checked out Wish Willies but on the end we picked these Salvadorian ladies whole lobster with rice and salad. So filling!
After dinner I couldn’t stand up so went to have a siesta. I noticed that there was a beauty pageant going on next door but that didn’t interfere with my sleep at all.
Woke up after midnight and went out to the Ocean club and saw the San Francisco couple. After a couple hours had some tacos and back to the hostel.
Ciao 4 now
~ Paulo ~
